Porcelain vs. Ceramic

Both Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are made from clay. However, Porcelain is a type of ceramic that is created through a dust-pressing process, resulting in a dense, fine-grained, and smooth tile with a sharply formed face. Both tiles can be used on walls, but Ceramic tiles should only be used on floors where there is low traffic. Porcelain tiles, due to their water and frost resistance, can be used outdoors

Tile Usage in Interiors

Tiles are not just for wet areas; they can be used in various spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, building lobbies, restaurants, retail stores, airports, schools, and residential entrances. Different installation patterns can create unique designs, and tiles come in various shapes like square, rectangular, chevron, diamond, rhomboid, circular (penny round), hexagon, triangular, elongated hexagon, picket, octagon, & lanterns.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tiles are made from a bisque, with the ceramic body itself being white, red, or variations in between based on the clay used. They are porous and typically glazed, available in various shapes. However, they have a lower bending strength and are not recommended for outdoor use in freezing & fluctuating climates.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles, a variation of ceramic, must pass tests set by the PTCA to be considered a true porcelain. They can be used outside due to their low water absorption and are resistant to water, bacteria, mold, and mildew. Porcelain tiles can be used on floors in any room and outside as cladding or in pavers.

Stone Tile

Stone tiles are natural materials, taken directly from the earth. Each piece is unique due to the natural color variations. However, they require sealing and special cleaners, and their strength varies, affecting the maximum size of slabs and tiles.

Glass Tile

Glass tiles offer a translucent quality that adds shine to a space. They can be made in many colors and finishes but are easily breakable. They are best suited to wall applications.

Encaustic/Cement Tile

Encaustic tiles are hand-made, known for their clear, bright colors that develop a patina over time. They are porous and require regular sealing. They are not recommended for outdoor use in fluctuating temperatures.

Terrazzo Tile

Terrazzo is man-made with natural materials and consists of chips of marble, granite, quartz, glass, or shell in a cement or epoxy matrix. It is durable and long-lasting, best suited for flooring. The type of binder or matrix of the terrazzo will determine its cleanability and wear over time.
